Learn About Email Spoofing
Email spoofing is the act of sending an email that appears to have originated from a different sender, in order to deceive the recipient, either for malicious purposes or to gain unauthorized access to the recipient's personal or confidential information. There are several ways to protect yourself from email spoofing, including:
- Check the sender's email address: Always scrutinize the sender's email address, domain, and other details closely. Spoofed emails often have subtle differences in the sender's address, such as a misspelled name or a different domain.
- Enable email authentication: Email authentication protocols like SPF (Sender Policy Framework), DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail), and DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance) can help identify and block spoofed emails. The RIMSD Tech Team has implemented all three of these on both the RIMSD.ORG and RIMSCHOOLS.ORG domains.
- Use anti-spoofing software: Some email clients and anti-virus software have built-in features to identify and block spoofed emails.
- Be cautious of suspicious emails: If you receive an email that seems suspicious, do not open any attachments or click any links until you have verified the authenticity of the email with the sender.
- Use strong passwords: Choose strong, unique passwords for your email accounts and change them regularly to reduce the risk of unauthorized access to your email.
